Accessibility isn't an afterthought for Visably — it's core to who we are. The people we support live with sight loss every day. Making sure our website works for them isn't just good practice: it's the minimum we owe them.

This page explains how accessible our website is, what we've done to get here and what to do if you find something that doesn't work as well as it should. Plus there's information about how to request our documents in alternative formats.

About this statement

This accessibility statement applies to this website (www.visably.org.uk), which is run by Giant Digital on behalf of Visably. It also applies to our donation site (donate.blind.org.uk/donate/), which is run by Access Group on a subdomain of our main website.

How accessible this website is

Creating an accessible and frictionless user experience was our top priority as we designed this website.

We know that people with sight loss and other disabilities are too often excluded by inaccessible websites. Making sure our website is user-friendly to everyone is incredibly important to us.

Together with our partners at Giant Digital, we have taken a great deal of care to ensure that this website is designed with our users in mind. We have done this based on Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and what people living with sight loss have told us about how they want to access our content online.

WCAG compliance – our website

This website (www.visably.org.uk) is fully compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard.

As part of the process of building this website, we commissioned a detailed audit of the site. Our auditors tested each page. They also completed a thorough manual evaluation of different aspects of this website.

WCAG compliance – our donation site 

Users who choose to make a donation on our website are taken to a sub domain (donate.blind.org.uk/donate). This donation site is run on software provided by Access Group to several charities.

During our accessibility audit, we identified some areas where this donation site did not comply with the required standards of WCAG – A and AA. These are listed below.

Because Access Group runs this donation site on our (and other charities’) behalf, we do not have full control to be able to address these issues. We are currently working with Access Group to try to resolve these remaining accessibility issues as soon as possible.

PDFs, Word and other documents

This website includes a number of PDF and Word documents.

Because the people who access our service are our priority, we’ve focussed our efforts on remediating all the audio device user manuals on our audio devices page. These are available to download as accessible PDFs. We are also working on new ways to supply user friendly instructions and manuals for all our equipment, such as audio guides and other accessible documentation. We will add these to our website when they are available.

For users who want a printable donation form, we have remediated downloadable form on our ways to donate page. This is now an accessible PDF, and all the fields are fillable. This may be done within a browser, however users of assistive technologies such as screen readers should use Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is available at no cost from Adobe.com.

Due to the number of documents, cost and time involved in rectifying all errors, we cannot guarantee all of the other documents on this website are fully accessible. We’ve assessed the cost of fixing all of them immediately and we believe that doing so would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations.

We are working through other documents on our website in order of priority, to remediate as many as possible to be accessible. Where an accessible PDF isn’t possible, we’ve endeavoured to provide an accessible Word document and/or audio recording as an alternative.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We will continue to audit our website on an annual basis to ensure that it remains accessible and fully compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard. We also welcome feedback from all our users and will endeavour to go above and beyond WCAG guidance where we can to ensure our content is easy to access for everyone who needs it.
